<p>It's following the user interface conventions on the system. A blue-circled arrow is intended to provide more detail about the item, where tapping on the item selects it and enables a certain action.</p>
<p>You can see an example of how Apple uses this in the WiFi settings on an iOS device, where tapping on a network name switches to that network, but tapping on the blue disclosure arrow for a network name brings up more information about that network.</p>
<p>I agree, it can be a little tricky if you don't see that option often, but it is Apple's solution to presenting this kind of thing in a touch-based table listing like this.</p>

<p>How are you trying to download the molecules? </p>
<p>Tapping on the main body of each item in the list will cause it to download. Tapping on the blue detail disclosure arrow to the right of the molecule's name will only bring up a web page that describes that molecule. I bet that you're tapping on the disclosure button instead of the name of the molecule. Try tapping on the name of the molecule instead.</p>
